Wood Floor Staining
Wood floor staining in Surrey, from soft natural tones to rich walnut and modern greys — always sampled on your own floor first.
Staining is one of the easiest ways to give a room a new look. Darker shades feel rich and traditional, while lighter and grey tones feel airy and contemporary.
Staining is carried out after sanding, as part of our floor sanding service. The stain goes onto clean, bare timber and is then sealed with protective coats.
Why we always sample
Every timber reacts differently to stain — pine, oak and maple can look completely different with the same product. We apply several test patches to a discreet area so you can see the real colour in your own light. For more ideas, read our guide on choosing a stain colour.
Popular colours
Raw and natural tones

What can be stained?
Most solid, parquet and engineered floors take stain well. Pine boards restored through our floorboard restoration service often look best in warmer shades. Parquet sanded through our parquet floor sanding service can be stained too, with extra care at block edges.
Our staining process
After sanding, we raise and cut back the grain so the stain absorbs evenly across the whole floor. We apply the colour in sections and work it in to avoid streaks and overlaps. It is then protected with two or three coats of oil or lacquer. Some coloured hardwax oils combine stain and protection in one product.
Because stain must go on bare wood, it is best done alongside sanding. It usually adds up to a day to the overall timeline. Darker colours show dust and scratches more than mid-tones, so we will talk through what suits your lifestyle.
Looking after a stained floor
A stained floor is cared for in the same way as any finished floor: sweep or vacuum regularly and clean with a damp mop and a suitable floor soap. Felt pads under chairs and tables protect the finish. Oiled and stained floors can be refreshed with a re-oil when they start to look dull.
Stained and finished floors are covered by our 3-month service guarantee. Guide costs are on our prices page.

Questions about wood floor staining
Can you stain a floor darker or lighter?
Yes. After sanding we lay out colour samples on your own floor so you can see how each shade looks in the room before we commit. Find out more about our staining service.
How are your prices worked out?
Prices depend on the floor area, condition, repairs needed and the finish you choose. Our price list shows typical starting prices, and the free survey gives you a fixed written quote.
Can you quote from photos?
Often, yes. A few clear photos and the room sizes let us give a guide price quickly. We confirm it with a short visit before work starts, so the final quote is fixed.
How should I clean an oiled floor?
Use a soft brush or vacuum, then a barely damp mop with a wood floor soap. Avoid steam mops and harsh cleaners. Read our care guide for a simple routine.
Why do you test stain colours on my floor?
Oak, pine and other woods all react to stain in their own way. Sample cards are only a rough guide, so testing on your own boards is the only reliable way to choose.
Do I need to empty the room?
Please clear the room of furniture, rugs and small items before we arrive. We can help move heavy furniture if we know in advance. Our preparation checklist has more tips.
