Re-coating lacquered floors in Surrey

A lacquered floor is protected by a hard film that sits on the surface of the timber. Over the years that layer wears thin in busy areas, picks up fine scratches and loses its even sheen. If the lacquer is still intact, a re-coat is quicker, cleaner and much cheaper than a full sand.

How we re-coat

  • A thorough clean to remove dirt, grease and polish residue

  • A light abrade with fine abrasive to key the existing finish

  • Dust extraction and a final tack clean

  • A fresh coat of hardwearing water-based lacquer in matt, satin or gloss

Can my floor be re-coated?

It suits lacquered floors with dull patches and fine scratches. If the lacquer is peeling, the wood has gone grey or there are deep scratches and dents, the floor needs a full floor sanding first. Oiled floors need a re-oil instead. Our guide on oil or lacquer explains the difference between the two finishes.

Benefits of re-coating

  • Quick, with minimal disruption

  • Low odour, water-based lacquers

  • Extends the life of your floor

  • Brings back a consistent, fresh look

Matt, satin or gloss?

A re-coat is also a chance to change the sheen of your floor. Matt looks the most natural and is very forgiving, satin is a popular middle ground, and gloss gives a classic shine. We bring samples so you can see the difference on your floor.

Planning maintenance

In most homes a re-coat every few years is enough; schools and offices may need one more often. The trick is to re-coat before the wood is exposed. We can set up a simple maintenance schedule for you.

Re-coating also suits landlords and letting agents who need a floor refreshed quickly between tenancies. Most rooms are finished in a day and ready for light use within hours.

FAQ

Questions about re-coating lacquered floors

All questions
Are your oils and lacquers pet-friendly?

Yes. We use low-VOC oils and water-based lacquers that are safe for families and pets once cured. Keep pets off the floor for the first 24 hours, and trim claws to help the finish last.

Can you quote from photos?

Often, yes. A few clear photos and the room sizes let us give a guide price quickly. We confirm it with a short visit before work starts, so the final quote is fixed.

Should I oil or lacquer my floor?

Hardwax oil gives a natural, matt look and can be refreshed in patches. Water-based lacquer sits on top as a hard-wearing film that copes well with spills and busy households. We recommend the right one at the survey — or read our guide to oil and lacquer.

How are your prices worked out?

Prices depend on the floor area, condition, repairs needed and the finish you choose. Our price list shows typical starting prices, and the free survey gives you a fixed written quote.

Can my floor be refreshed without a full sand?

If the finish is worn but the wood is not damaged, a maintenance coat is often enough. It is quicker and cheaper than sanding and keeps the floor protected. See re-oiling.

Can a lacquered floor be re-coated?

Yes — as long as the wear has not reached the bare wood. We lightly abrade the surface, clean it and apply a new coat of lacquer, giving back an even, protective finish without a full sand.
