Parquet Floor Sanding
Specialist parquet sanding that respects the pattern and brings the grain back to life.
A parquet floor can last a century or more if it is sanded and finished properly. With grain running in several directions, careless sanding leaves swirls and scratches that show up as soon as the finish goes on.
Our Surrey team uses a multi-direction sanding sequence and fine final abrasives so the pattern looks crisp and even from every angle. This is a specialist branch of our floor sanding services.
Before we sand: repairs and re-laying
Loose blocks are common in older parquet, especially near doorways and radiators. We lift and re-bed them, and replace missing blocks with matched or reclaimed timber through our parquet floor repairs service. You can read more in our guide to parquet restoration.

Oil or lacquer on parquet?
Hardwax oil brings out warmth in oak and is easy to refresh in busy areas, whereas a water-based lacquer is ideal for high-traffic hallways. If you would like a different tone, we can add wood floor staining before the final coats.
Getting parquet flat and even
Over the years parquet blocks can lift, dip and wear unevenly, especially in hallways. Diagonal passes level the floor first, then finer abrasives remove the marks left behind. Borders and corners are finished by hand-held machines so the whole floor looks consistent. The result is a crisp, even pattern with no swirl marks under the finish.
We restore parquet in period houses, flats, schools and church halls across Surrey. For larger buildings, see our public spaces service. Every survey includes a check for loose blocks, so repairs and sanding can be planned together.
A typical parquet floor takes two to three days from start to finish. Full dust extraction keeps the rest of the house clean while we work.
Keeping parquet looking good
A maintenance re-oil every couple of years keeps an oiled parquet floor looking fresh. Every restoration is covered by our 3-month service guarantee. See guide costs on our prices page.

Questions about parquet floor sanding
How do you sand parquet without damaging it?
Parquet runs in several directions, so we sand it in stages at different angles. A final pass with a fine-grit buffer removes swirl marks and leaves an even surface ready for oil or lacquer.
Can old parquet be saved?
In nearly every case, yes. We re-glue loose blocks, replace missing ones with matched or reclaimed timber, then sand and finish the whole floor so the repairs disappear. Find out more about parquet floor repairs.
What about the black adhesive under old parquet?
Many older parquet floors were laid on bitumen adhesive. It does not stop us restoring the floor, but loose blocks need cleaning back and re-fixing with a compatible adhesive. We check this during the survey and include it in the quote.
How many coats of finish do you apply?
We usually apply two coats of hardwax oil or three coats of lacquer. High-traffic areas can have an extra coat for added protection.
Are your oils and lacquers pet-friendly?
Yes. We use low-VOC oils and water-based lacquers that are safe for families and pets once cured. Keep pets off the floor for the first 24 hours, and trim claws to help the finish last.
Do you need electricity and water?
We need access to a standard power socket and, ideally, parking near the property. Our machines run on domestic power, and we bring everything else with us.
