Parquet floor repairs in Surrey
Parquet floors are built to last a century, but the bitumen or adhesive underneath does not. Changes in humidity, underfloor heating and old water leaks can all break the bond between the blocks and the subfloor. The good news is that most parquet can be repaired rather than replaced.
What a parquet repair involves
Removing loose blocks, cleaning them and re-laying them on fresh adhesive
Replacing broken or missing blocks with reclaimed parquet of the same species and size
Restoring the original pattern and borders where they have been patched badly
Dealing with uneven or damaged subfloors before re-laying
Matching blocks to your floor
Parquet laid fifty or a hundred years ago has a colour that new timber cannot copy. That is why we use reclaimed blocks wherever possible, matched by species, size and grain before they go down. The final step is usually parquet sanding, which levels the floor and blends the repair completely.
Signs your parquet needs attention
If blocks sound hollow, move underfoot or have started to lift, it is worth acting early. Loose blocks tend to loosen their neighbours, so early repairs keep costs down. Our guide to parquet restoration explains the common causes in more detail.
Why we reuse original parquet
Wherever we can, we lift loose blocks carefully, clean the old bitumen from the back and re-lay them in their original position. This keeps the colour and character of the floor and keeps the cost of new timber to a minimum. If the subfloor is part of the problem, we level or repair it before any blocks go back down.

Questions about parquet floor repairs
Do I need to empty the room?
Please clear the room of furniture, rugs and small items before we arrive. We can help move heavy furniture if we know in advance. Our preparation checklist has more tips.
How are your prices worked out?
Prices depend on the floor area, condition, repairs needed and the finish you choose. Our price list shows typical starting prices, and the free survey gives you a fixed written quote.
Can old parquet be saved?
In nearly every case, yes. We re-glue loose blocks, replace missing ones with matched or reclaimed timber, then sand and finish the whole floor so the repairs disappear. Find out more about parquet floor repairs.
How do you sand parquet without damaging it?
Parquet runs in several directions, so we sand it in stages at different angles. A final pass with a fine-grit buffer removes swirl marks and leaves an even surface ready for oil or lacquer.
What about the black adhesive under old parquet?
Many older parquet floors were laid on bitumen adhesive. It does not stop us restoring the floor, but loose blocks need cleaning back and re-fixing with a compatible adhesive. We check this during the survey and include it in the quote.
Can you repair a water-damaged floor?
Often, yes. Light marks often sand away, while badly swollen or stained boards are replaced and blended in. The floor must be fully dry first, so we may check moisture levels before starting.
